H I S T O R Y |
Inês Jacinta de Neves was born as the third child to Josefa Almeida Neves and Miguel Tavares Neves, on October 27, 1977. She followed twin brothers Osvaldo and Placido, who were both born in 1974. By the time Inês was born, the family was struggling to make ends meet, with Josefa working as an underpaid teacher at the nearby elementary school, and Miguel working as a bartender in the family's Portuguese restaurant, Imaculada, named for Inês' paternal grandmother, who'd died before she was born. Inês, originally, had dreams to attend college and get out of Rio before she was eighteen, but those dreams were dashed when she was ten years old. Josefa explained to her daughter they she and her husband had saved enough money for one of the boys to attend school, but there was no money for Inês to do so. She would be dropping out of school as soon as she hit sixteen and working at Imaculada, helping to run the restaurant which was currently staffed by Miguel, his two sisters, and his sisters' husbands.
Needless to say, this caused Inês to be very resentful, and to this day she's angry at her parents. She had dreams of going to college and becoming a translator, traveling the world and learning lots of exotic languages. Now she works nearly every day at Imaculada, waiting tables and very occasionally, since she turned twenty, manning the bar when her father needs a night off. She lives in a small house in Rio with her parents, her brothers, her father's father (her father's mother and both her mother's parents are dead), and her mother's younger sister. Despite knowing it's nearly impossible, Inês still harbors dreams of someday getting out of Rio de Janeiro.
The brightest spot in her life came when she was fourteen, when her powers emerged. Cleaning up the bar one evening, Inês spotted a rather shady looking man watching her from the bar. She slid into the shadows and wished to not be seen, and soon enough the man seemed to not be able to see her anymore, and left. curious, Inês shared what had occurred with Placido, the brother she was closest to. He had her test it several times, before they deduced that Inês has control over shadows. She can create weapons or shields, and she can also simply melt into them in order to hide. Lately, she's started using this to her advantage, and has added a bit pf petty theft to her repertoire. She knows it's wrong, but she's so angry with the world that she simply doesn't care. Anything that will make her monotonous life more bearable is fine by her. |
P E R S O N A L I T Y |
As a child, when she thought she had attainable dreams and aspirations, Inês was a very bright young girl. She was rambunctious and full of life and energy. She was a tomboy, always playing football with her brothers and the boys in her neighborhood. All this, however, changed when she turned ten. Told she was going to be dropping out of school when she turned sixteen, and that her dreams were nothing more than the foolish delusions of a child, Inês changed. She became moody, selfish, and extremely hot-tempered. She has no tolerance for stupidity in anyone, least of all her family members. She keeps everyone at a distance, telling herself that if her parents can betray her, anyone can.
She's extremely apathetic towards just about everything, saying that whatever happens to people happens for a reason, even if it's something horrible. She's sick of Rio de Janeiro, and if someone offered her the chance to leave, she'd take it without thinking. She doesn't particularly care about the fate of the world, preferring to think that humanity has brought it on itself. She's not particularly giving, and if someone snaps at her, she's liable to snap right back. She'll resort to physical force if necessary, and she usually needs little urging. She tends to hit first, ask questions later. |
A P P E A R A N C E |
Inês stands at about five feet five inches, and she's on the slender side. Her hair is naturally a dark shade of brown, but she's been dyeing it pink since she was thirteen, as a way to rebel against her family. She's pale, for someone of Portuguese decent, and her eyes are an odd shade of purple. She prefers to wear rather revealing clothing, usually sporting tank tops and halter tops with low-slung jeans and shorts. Very rarely will she wear a skirt, and it's usually forced on her when she is in one. She wears next to no makeup, ever (she insists she's not a girly-girl).
She usually has a couple of bracelets on, but no jewelry besides that. Jewelry is frivolous in her opinion, but the bracelets were given to her by her paternal grandmother before she died, so she very rarely takes them off. If someone comments on her clothing style, she tends to tell them to back off -- in much more colorful language. She has a wide vocabulary of curse words, and she uses them every opportunity she gets. Her father often tells her she's not very ladylike, to which Inês shoots back that she's not a lady -- she's a secondary school dropout working at a restaurant/bar, and if he wanted her to be a lady, he should have let her go to university. |
